Troubleshooting macOS Screen Recording Permissions

Last updated: Mar 11, 12:00 PM

Apple's macOS includes strict privacy controls. If a customer is trying to share their screen but you only see a black box, or they receive an error when selecting an entire screen or application window, they likely need to grant "Screen Recording" permissions to their browser.

Steps to resolve for the customer:

  1. Click the Apple Logo () in the top left corner of their Mac.
  2. Select System Settings (or "System Preferences" on older macOS versions).
  3. Click on Privacy & Security in the left sidebar.
  4. Scroll down and click on Screen Recording.
  5. They will see a list of applications. They need to find their web browser (e.g., Google Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge) and toggle the switch to the ON position.
  6. Note: They may be prompted to enter their Mac administrator password or use Touch ID to make this change.
  7. Once enabled, they should quit and reopen their web browser completely for the changes to take effect.

If they are only trying to share a specific tab within the same browser, macOS requires fewer permissions, and this step might not be necessary. However, for full desktop or cross-application sharing on a Mac, these permissions are mandatory.
